Last night I was fortunate enough to head down the road and meet up with Smitty of the Diesel Crew (www.DieselCrew.com). I thought I had some crazy training equipment, but after visiting Smitty, I know I just scratched the surface! Also, Smitty had a wrestler there, Mike, who was throwing some good weight around, and more importantly he understood the importance of form.
One of our more important discussions revolved around that topic. It is crucial for young athletes to hone their technique before they start piling up the numbers. Of course there is safety concerns, but sometimes the players don’t realize that by doing things correctly at the beginning, they will be setting the groundwork for a lot of future growth and strength. Once they get their technique down, the numbers will begin to increase drastically!
Also, I’m a strong believer in habits. Are you the type of person that will do the right thing when you get fatigued, overloaded, and when no one is looking? A bit of advice for all the athletes out there, MAKE GOOD HABITS whenever you can, including the gym. Translate that mindset to your athletic competitions, and you will be significantly better off. Those are all goals to strive for, and it can start in the weight room!
Training Day with Smitty.
