Serious Squatting and Deadlifting

April 13, 2009 on 6:18 pm | In Strength Training | 9 Comments

Matt Ladewski came down from Buffalo to join the Diesel Crew and myself on a weekend workout.  Man is that guy strong!  Get subscribed to his youtube videos.

We started off with some chain squatting on foam, moved to extra wide deadlifts and finished with some reverse hyper and lower back work.

Highlights:

  • All of Matt’s heavy lifts
  • Jedd’s double overhand deadlifting
  • Playing with Jedd’s Inch DB Replica
  • Brian’s 575 dl at around 200 lbs (half of that weight is his massive hair).
  • A 10 degree BBQ and Smitty’s house with about 2 cows worth of meat.

  2. do you exclusively deadlift utilizing that wide sumo stance? If so, why the preference and what are the benefits over a traiditional stance. Thanks

  3. Bill,

Good question. I deadlift multiple stances. Today I pulled conventional, and will be for a few more months.

Sumo needs some more hip strength and flexibility. Here is a FULL post on it from a few weeks back with the benefits of both!

  6. B.E.A.U.tiful. Do you have any advice/resources on how to deadlift properly?

I’ve been deadlifting for quite awhile now and found that my lower back starts to lose its arc in the concentric phase above certain weights. However, I do not feel that those weights are too heavy for me. I think this means my lower back is doing too much work. It also is sore after a deads session, while my glutes and hams are hardly sore. Is there any advice and exercises you guys can recommend that would help me to use my hamstrings and glutes, that is, the hip portion, rather than the lower back? Thanks.
