Exercise of the Week – Tire Flipping

Most people that come to this site probably already know the benefits of tire flipping for athletes, but I cannot skip mentioning it when it comes to top exercises.  It is one of the few exercises that has the athlete work in multiple planes of motion.  Also, it is a great mind over matter, mental training, style of lift.

Often its a battle that starts with an athlete failing at the flip.  However someone in the group will step-up, struggle through it, and hit the full flip.  Then all of a sudden everyone is back in trying it! Tire flips creates a quality team building atmosphere. We flip for time or for reps.  Our tire is on the lighter side – approx. 400 lbs and its time to upgrade for our stronger athletes!

Cornell University Saftey Shane C. lands a legondary one handed tire flip TWO DAYS after major wrist surgery at one of our summer football camps! (A good story for another day!)

Anyone else flip tires and have some stories or more benefits to add?

*I’ll add not everyone at Synergy Athletics gets to flip the tire. Each athlete needs relative strength, a strong musculature, and willing to listen to proper form instructions*

  5. Al,

Look up any tractor tire supplier in the phone book and ask if you can take an old tire off their hands. They usually give them away for free, since they have to pay the state to dispose of them. Get a truck and get one!
