Last night, before my workout, I met with a local TV station employee to work a marketing exchange. He wanted to go to a local Italian resturant and eat some pizza and wings…so we feasted.
….Fast Foward 2 hours….
As I finish my last set of sandbag lunges, I’m bent over, clenching my sides wishing I never had met a slice of meat lovers pizza. My mouth felt like salty cotton and my insides were screaming!
Bent over in pain for the next 15 minutes gave me some time to reflect on some other mistakes I’ve made in the past
Mistakes I’ve Made.
- Diet in High School…and College. How many slices can you eat at a Pizza Hut Buffet? 18 on March 1998. Did anyone else leave comment cards in the dining hall saying “Please have more philly cheesesteak days” and then run down the stairs like a kid on Christmas hoping they would have it? If only I would have taken more pride in all aspects of my life…

- Poor Exercise Planning. I was the kid in high school that would buy the magazines and follow whatever program they had in them.I was bouncing from program to program – mostly bodybuilding and not the athletic development that I needed.I did always challenge myself, but I was training harder not smarter.

- Lack of Recovery / Rest. I beat myself up in high school. Workouts, practices, games, everything was 100%. My senior year I found myself falling asleep around 7 pm during the football season. I had to go to the doctors and get checked for mono and other things. Looking back on it, it was probably just my body shutting down and demanding a break!

I hate making mistakes (and of course I dislike admitting to them), but I see a lot of the young athletes out there making the same errors I did.
How many teenagers do you think actually eat breakfast every day? According to the University of Wisconsin’s research 30% of teens skip breakfast.
You can only guess at how many guzzle sugary drinks all day and then try to work out….then stay up until all hours of the night playing video games.
So, I”m admitting to my errors and shortcomings as an example. If you can’t care of your rest and your diet resembles a “what not to eat” list, then you WILL NOT GET STRONGER.
==> Misery loves company – anyone else make mistakes??? Post them up in the comments, hopefully it will reach at least one of the younger athletes that read this site and change their life for the better.

I can honestly say I am a victim of all three of those mistakes. What you talked about at the end was my biggest vice though. I would never get enough sleep leaving me no energy for my workouts. The more you train the more rest and recovery you need. Give your body time to heal!

Pat – Id have a tough time picking the BIGGEST mistake from high school athletes, but that could very well be it. Some of the kids stay up to 1 or 2 am, go to school, workout, etc, etc and be falling over tired!
Thanks for the comment!

You lack respect for the epic bloat that follows eating that much pizza. Pizza is most choice for the squat and bench.

Joe,
You got me; I am guilty of all three! The Chinese Buffet is my weakness!!

Ha Karsten. I always claim I am “carb loading” when I falter with the pizza. And yes…MASSIVE bloat.

As I am reading this, I am eating some tasty holiday party leftover chekmix. I am guilty of #1.

guilty of all three as well. But the thing I’m most embarrassed about was looking down my nose at those people using free weights while I was busy “isolating my muscles” doing Nautilus.

Gene,
I just got a plate myself! Havent touched them though, I think I can hold out on these!
Now maybe if they were the PB with the hersey kiss, it would be a different story!

One of the mistakes I made in HS was not eating enough. Many young girls starve themselves thinking it would help them lose fat but it leads to metabolic problems and loss of muscle and bone. My performance would have been much better if I knew when and what to eat. Recovery is hugely overlooked.
Great article. I see these things a lot.

I’d have to say not spending enough time on the warmup/prehab aspects of training. The deadlift is at an all-time high, while putting on socks is equally challenging. Oh, and I’ll join the club on excessive pizza loading from time to time.

Brian – I should have mentioned warm up! I dont think I did that very much either in high school – just didnt understand the body enough!

Rhea, I know what you mean – good call on that one.

I made every one of these in high school! I worked so hard at it that I was starting to have periods where I could not sit still. I would ask permission to go to the can and sprint down, jump up on some pipes and do pullups til I calmed down. I trained to heavy when younger and brother my shoulder complex is a mess because of it. I was like you Joe, I bought all the rags and jumped from program to program. I should have ate the rags and I would be money and body ahead.Eat right, take time to recover and guard your joints, cause when you wear out your body where will you live?
