I stated a problem in a previous post. People like to pig out on Superbowl Sunday. I did mention that you should enjoy yourself and indulging in moderation is fine. To help yourself out, check out this 5 minute exercise routine Mike Hanley from The Training Studio put together. It uses the Tabata style of conditioning I mentioned in conditioning routine last week. Check it out, and honestly, its worth the 5 minutes!
(In my best Billy Mays voice) I’m not talking about muscle either. I’m talking about 100 % pure bad body weight! The best kind. All you need to do is go to a Superbowl Party and eat whatever you want, and then some! Wings, pizza, cookies, cake, cupcakes, everything goes! Might as well wear sweats because this additional weight might blow the button off your jeans. As an additional bonus, you will get to feel like crap for at least two days after! This one time offer of free advice comes with a satisfaction guarantee, or your money back! (note, this is free advice). Order now and you will get a free kick in the stomach, at no extra charge! No exercise or dieting required!
Hopefully you picked up on the Internet sarcasm. I’m not a nutrition guru, but I have a good idea of what’s good for me and what isn’t. I assume that all of you know that a cupcake will contribute more to a muffin top than a six pack. All I’m going to recommend is to not stuff yourself and compromise quality gains. Sure I’m going to have a few “treats” (fan of chicken wings), but I all in moderation! So as a healthy reminder – Eat Responsibly!
As a big finish to my Superbowl post, here is the best Superbowl commercial series of all times. If you disagree post a video link in the comment section.
Over the next few weeks I will be posting videos from different sports training. Up first is MMA. We are going to do this tournament style. Rank the videos below. The overall winner (best training) will move on the next round to be compared against other sports (football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, etc – open to suggestions on which other sports train the hardest). Also there will be a Toliet Bowl round for the “Worst Training” so make a note of that!
There are some big Mixed Martial Arts fights these weekends. Some boxers and MMA fighters have great intense workouts that you would expect. Others, not so much. I picked some quick workout videos from MMA fighters since I couldn’t find any with boxers that include a weight lifting routine. Rank them from worst to best in the comment section. Include anything you would subtract or add. Even if you don’t like MMA, take a look at the workouts. There is always things to learn from different sport trainings.
Randy “The Natural” Couture
Alexander Houston
Rich “Ace” Franklin
BJ Penn
Jeff Monson
My Opinion
Its odd, I find the couple people that did not turn out to be the best fighters have the better training programs. Perhaps their hard work was able to push them that far, while others depend on natural talent.
1. *Best* Jeff Monson – I like the style of training, but I don’t like his trainer saying things like “never been done before.” He has no idea.
2. Alexander Houston – Gets his head through on the overhead presses and trains explosively with the tire.
3. Randy Couture – I like that he doesn’t put the bar down, this can contribute to his great grappling strength. However, some of the exercises could use a little extra ROM. Also, with only this short clip to work from, I don’t like purely circuit training for fighters.
4. Rich Franklin – I like improving work capacity, but I do not like all the machine work.
5. *Worst* BJ Penn – Not impressed with his training.
If you have any other nominee videos – post them in the comments with your thoughts.
Here are two videos on worth ethic. I’m not a fan of Ray Lewis, but his words ring true.
“See I don’t train for reps, I don’t train for time, I train for failure. “ Notice how Ray is still going through the prehabilitation, stretching, and resting. But when it comes go time, he is ready.
What I like about Brian Urlacher’s video is that he doesn’t make a big deal out of waking up early to workout and train. It just happens naturally. If he sat around and complained about the number of hours he had to put in, or was always talking about what time he went to the gym, he would not be the athlete he grew into. Let that be a lesson. No need to brag about hours spent in the gym. Do it for yourself first!
Squats are a great lift and should be performed by nearly all athletes. Why not take some notes from someone that squats 1000 lbs plus? AJ Roberts really knows his stuff. When we were down in NJ a few weeks ago I was able to meet AJ and he critiqued my squat form. Always keep learning!
